Standard 7

Instructional Planning Skills – The online teacher plans and prepares instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals.

Performance Indicator #7.1 The online teacher clearly communicates to students stated and measurable objectives, course goals, grading criteria, course organization and expectations.

  • Syllabus – Blending the Lines Between What Happened and Imagination – I created this syllabus for the online course.  It details course expectations, grading policies, late policies, and academic honesty policies.  It also provides a schedule, instructor contact information, and communication response time guidelines.  It also includes the course goals and objectives.

Performance Indicator #7.2 The online teacher maintains accuracy and currency of course content, incorporates internet resources into course content, and extends lesson activities.

  • Virtual Field Trip – I created a virtual filed trip for students by using photos and other media that pertain to places that might inspire writing.  It has primary resources and supplemental resources as well as instructional resources to help students improve their writing.  It was designed to be used for sophomores, but can be applied to any writing scenario and used in any setting from traditional classrooms to online environments.

Performance Indicator #7.3 The online teacher designs and develops subject-specific online content.

7.3a – Examples such as: Discipline-based online course or lesson or storyboard or prototype.

  • BOE District Assessment (RHS) – This lesson was designed to help students to be able to determine credible sources from the internet and print media.  It involves researching and includes and assessment module to practice and determine if more instruction is needed.  It can be used in a traditional, online, or blended environment.  The versions linked here is one that was branded to be used as supplement for students at a traditional classroom environment and as a district assessment (students have to prove proficient by completing a certain number of assessments in order to graduate) for Riverside High School in Basin, Wyoming.  The online components were originally designed for an online environment.

7.3b – Applications of instructional design models (ADDIE).

  • Citing Sources Correctly using APA Style – This assessment / lesson was designed to help students learn how to cite sources correctly and avoid plagiarism.  It follows a specific design model and that includes a rationale as wells a various activities that will help students develop these abilities.  It also includes an evaluation section, needs assessment, and task analyses.

Performance Indicator #7.4 The online teacher uses multiple forms of media to design course content.

  • Course Expectations – Discussion Based Assessment – I developed this discussion board to fit into IDLA language arts courses.  It was part of my online field experience course that I took on my path to the Idaho Online Teaching Endorsement.  IDLA asked that interns create an assessment that is discussion based.  This assessment is designed to go hand in hand with a netiquette lesson.  It uses text and images and requires students to review the syllabus and expectations of them.  It also gives them a chance to analyze the expectations and think of as well as discuss some of expectations that they might have for the course and instructor.  A modified version will be included in the English 12B course starting next term.

Performance Indicator #7.5 The online teacher designs course content to facilitate interaction and discussion.

  • Screen Writing: The Scene – I created this module of the a screen writing course.  Although, it was created in EDTECH 522 (Adult Online Teaching) the principles translate easily to the K-12 environment and could easily be worked into a senior English class.  It involves group activities and discussions (synchronous and asynchronous) to discuss student writing.

Performance Indicator #7.6 The online teacher designs course content that complies with intellectual property rights and fair use standards.

  • Copyright and Fair Use Scavenger Hunt – The scavenger hunt takes students through the process of copyright and what is considered fair use.  There is a worksheet with questions to answer.  With the issues that plague education with plagiarism and copyright in the digital age, this is an imperative lesson.  It was designed to be used in any environment (traditional, online, or blended).
