Knowledge of Online Education – The online teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures in online instruction and creates learning experiences that take advantage of the trans-formative potential in online learning environments.


Performance Indicator #1.1 The online teacher utilizes current standards for best practices in online teaching to identify appropriate instructional processes and strategies.

  • Principles of Online Instruction  – I created this guide as part of my course work for EDTECH 523 and Boise State University.  The four main principles, in my opinion, represent the four major components of any classroom.  They are even more important in an online classroom.  I use these strategies in my current position working with adult learners online.

Performance Indicator #1.2 The online teacher demonstrates application of communication technologies for teaching and learning.

1.2a – Artifact demonstrates examples of applications of online teaching, learning, and communication technologies/tool.

1.2b – Artifact demonstrates planning for communication in online course design.

  • Communication Plan – I created this communication plan during EDTECH 523.  It’s a plan to handle communication with students in an online classroom.  It includes strategies for icebreakers, introductions, discussion assessment, expectations, and strategies for interacting with certain types of students.

Performance Indicator #1.3 The online teacher demonstrates application of emerging technologies for teaching and learning.

  • Space, the MOOC – With a partner, We created a Massive Online Open Course about space and the universe. The course was designed during EDTECH 543 – Social Network Learning.  We made heavy use of social networks and other web 2.0 social media. The course has components on Google Sites, Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, and makes use of personal learning networks and other learning methods that revolve around social networks and media.

Performance Indicator #1.4 The online teacher demonstrates application of advanced troubleshooting skills.

 1.4a – Instruction/Direction for Troubleshooting.

  • EDTECH 502 – As part of the EDTECH 502 course, many different types of sites were created that had instructions and activities for a variety of projects and technical applications.

1.4b – Troubleshooting information for students.

  • Audio Headset Guide – I created this Adobe Connect guide and others as part of my duties while training in the corporate environment.  Students and learners, even trainers, need help and tutorials on how to operate Adobe Connect which is the main portal in which trainers connect and interact with students.

Performance Indicator #1.5 The online teacher demonstrates the use of design methods and standards in course/document creation and delivery.

 1.5a – Application of graphic design principles.

1.5b – Application of instructional design tools.

  • Pretty Princess Lana Lee: The Doggie and the Dragon – A Digital Story – I created a digital story for my daughter from photos of her early life and creative commons photos online.  It was a story that I told her when she was little and continue telling her today.  I used the principles of message and graphic design during the creation of the story.

Performance Indicator #1.6 The online teacher demonstrates knowledge of access, equity (digital divide) and safety concerns in online environments.

  • Essentials of Netiquette – The essentials of Netiquette lesson is, ideally, designed for the introductory week of an online class.  It help students, especially new online students, to  the etiquette of online interactions.  It involves a presentation with some helpful guidelines, a web resource designed to impress the importance of the concept and a scavenger hunt so that students can start to apply the netiquette concepts.
